Today, even the smallest business is able to build their global presence — and potentially earn global income — without acquiring or building overseas, thanks to the internet.

Roughly 4.66 billion people around the world use the internet at the start of 2021 — that’s close to 60 percent of the world’s total population. The number of worldwide internet users surpassed four billion at the end of 2020, and the global e-commerce spend was $3.5 trillion.

If your website gets visitors who speak different languages, it’s a good idea to apply a Multi-language feature. You can create a bot entirely that can offer visitors the ability to chat in their native languages, or it will detect the visitors’ browser default language and actions on that. Implementing a multilingual bot is another step in interacting with your customers all over the world!

Benefits of having a multilingual chatbot.

Most of the users choose their native language while chatting with the chatbots. So, introducing a chatbot that speaks only one language to open up conversations to over three billion people worldwide isn’t a very good idea, right?

  • Expand the customer base
  • Save Cost
  • Show your customers that you value them and their cultures
  • Reduce time spent on solving problems
  • Improve Business ROI

If you want to enter the worldwide market, you need to invest in multilingual chatbots.

Even if you don’t aim at going globally, there is the case you still need to implement this.

Take India for example.

India is a country that consists of people of different religions. Here you can find people speaking Marathi, Rajasthani, Bengali, Gujrati, English, and specially Hinglish. Although English has become the second most popular languages through words. But still, people all around the world prefer to communicate in their mother tongue.

So, if these are the facts, why is everyone so behind?

Step #1: Select the ‘Language’ your bot will speak

To allow your bot to chat with the visitor’s specific language preferences, you need to add the ‘Language’ inside the Bot Setting section. It can be found in the Setting menu on the top right corner of the app.

Once it’s saved, let’s move to the next steps.

Step #2: Hello, Hola, Xin chao…

Here we assume that you already have your bot flow presented in your main language. The next step is you translate that flow into a second, or the third one because bot cannot translate the entire flow itself.

You can let customers choose their preferred language and then let the bot detect the proper language based on the language of users’ browsers.

Step #3: Teach your bot how to be multilingual.

After you finish adding new languages in the above settings. Let’s go back to the flow editor and flow these 3 steps below.

Drag n’ drop the block Language Switch in the Library panel to the flow and adjust the block content.

Example: Please select your preferred language.

All the available languages will be shown here for users to choose.

Connect the just-created Language Switch block to the main flow. It should be put at the very beginning of the bot conversation (right behind Conversation entry), so when a user opens the chat widget, the language buttons will be shown to the user and they will immediately feel right at home.

Naturally, your bot doesn’t have to be limited to just sending messages; it can go further and include many other nodes and connections.

When you create a bot that supports multi-languages — you just need to add more ‘Prefered languages’ in the flow and in the setting. Later, connect them similarly as before. It will check if the visitor’s language (browser languages) is equal to a specific language available from the list.

If that’s the visitor’s browser setting, it will match the language. If none of the languages is detected — the default message will be sent in the Main language.

Step #4: Translate bot for two different languages or more

Let’s click on the symbol Change Language Setting, choose the language and start to translate text right in the flow.

It will not affect your main flow as the content was saved in both languages. Please click the Change Language Setting to view your flow in another language.

Step #5: Greeting Message setup

Greeting Message is the text chatbot shows to the user initiating a chat when users land on your pages. So, you’ll need to teach the bot the language so it can perform better at drawing visitor’s attention.

You can set an interactive greeting message using the BotStar bot builder inside the Behavior setting.

Click the “Behavior” section, in the “First greeting message” box, provide the message your chatbot should be shown to the users when they open the chat, and then click on Change Language Editing to start adding content in different languages.

So when a user opens the chat widget, the language buttons will be shown to the user, and the user can select the preferred language to proceed with the interaction.

Test your Multilingual Chatbot

Once you set up the greeting message and the bot flow, the final step is to test your chatbot.

As you can see, not only the messages but also other notifications on the widget are shown in that selected language.
